The Low Times
"And the people murmured against Moses, saying, 'What shall we drink?'" (Exodus 15:24).
Isn't it amazing how everything that was so perfect yesterday can be so wrong today? The Israelites experienced ups and downs frequently. It wasn't long after dancing for joy because of God's goodness that they began murmuring and complaining over God's lack of attentiveness. "What shall we drink?" they whined. Within a matter of days the great and mighty miracles dimmed in their memories and they unabashedly fussed over something trite. Didn't they know that the God who parted the Red Sea would provide water to drink?
God does not give us the luxury of using our hormones as an excuse to murmur and complain (See Philippians 2:14). He expects us to step beyond the temptation of flesh-oriented discontentment and to replace it with God-honoring gratitude and satisfaction.
The lows are inevitable, but godly actions and words are not optional. Bite your tongue, sing a song, leave the room, do whatever it takes to remain holy. God does not give us a free pass just because we are having a hormonal moment.
Today's Hot Flash: If Christ can refrain from lashing out at His persecutors in the midst of his pain and suffering, we can respect others even if we don't feel like it.
Prayer: Patient Father, forgive my sinful outburst. Help me remain in control of my emotions. Give me solitude when it is most needed and rest in time of turmoil. Thank You for Your tender mercies. Even when I fail, You remain faithful. Amen.
