Day 4: The Lure of Power - Devotions for the Menopausal Woman

The Lure of Power

"And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good, and the evening and the morning were the sixth day" (Genesis 1:31).

Eve - the mother of all mankind - was perfect in every way.  She had a gorgeous body, a sweet temperament, and perfectly balanced hormones.  So what happened?

The cunning words of a fascinating creature lured her to a dangerous place.  His offerings of power and prestige intrigued her.  Was she suffering from PMS?  No.  Somewhere deep inside her a simmering began, and as the serpent lavished his enticing words on her, that simmering turned into a boil.  Yes!  She wanted to be like God!  And in one swish of the arm, she captured that forbidden fruit in her grasp and chomped down.

Life would never be the same again, for Eve, or for the rest of humanity, sin entered the picture.  Eve couldn't blame run amuck hormones for her sinful behavior.  It was a decision of the will that led her down such a destructive path.

Hormones make an easy scapegoat, but as we learned with Eve, they are not always to blame.  God expects us to take responsibility for our wrong choices.  He doesn't buy the temporary insanity plea and neither should we.

Today's Hot Flash:  Vigilance is the Key to holiness.  Menopause does not give us license to misbehave, but a forewarning to draw near to God before the serpent has time to strike.

Prayer:  Father, teach me to take responsibility for my sin and seek forgiveness as soon as my heart is convicted.  Amen
